Meadow of the Rising Sun
Hand cut paper silhouette
A seasonal story of a California meadow in the morning light of the rising sun, expressed through layers of hand cut paper pressed with antique textiles. Commissioned for a California coastal home that is airy and bright with light colors.
The meadow of California native plants includes Coral Bells (Heuchera maxima), Tokapish (Dichelostemma capitatum), Shooting Stars (Primula clevelandii), and White Fairy Lanterns (Calochortus albus).
Made from thick paper that is hand pressed with a textile leaving behind the impression of every thread. Each textile paper is cut by hand with thousands of craft knife blades that dull quickly under the strong fibers of the heavy paper. Each composition has layers of paper silhouettes that are mounted to a sheet of museum glass that is separated by wood spacers in the frame to create depth and shadow. The frames are custom made maple wood stained by hand by the artist with white milk paint and finished with organic bees wax. All pieces are hand cut by artist Justina Freel from her own original illustrations.
