Bee's Bliss Tea Cottage

We transformed a derelict 1916 clinker brick shed into a tea cottage for the 2017 Pasadena Showcase House of Design. Set in a coast live oak woodland on a Tudor revival estate in Pasadena, CA, the tea cottage was designed as a respite for the lady of the estate to rest and relax from her time spent tending her english roses in the garden. We preserved the historical integrity of the original Marston & Van Pelt structure by restoring the brick covered in english ivy, painting the exterior woodwork, and installing the exterior lighting without touching the historical brick. Existing doors were replaced with custom designed brass leaded glass doors with bronze bee knobs, locks, and honeycomb escutcheons. On the interior we created a Tudor style half-timber framed cottage of salvaged oak beams and wood structure with hand made lime plaster ceiling and walls.

For the whole month of the Pasadena Showcase House event we created botanical arrangements of California native botanicals direct from the surrounding tea cottage garden we designed and planted along with David Austin heirloom roses from the Rose Thicket cottage home garden.

— Exterior Design —

The existing landscape of a California native coast live oak woodland near the Arroyo Seco river was overgrown with invasive english ivy. Rose Thicket removed all invaive plants and restored the landscape exclusively with California native plants in a formal English cottage garden style.

The brass leaded glass pattern of diamonds and hexagons symbolizes the history of Tudor diamond pattern windows and the honeycomb of the bees. Cast bronze bee knobs & locks with honey comb escutcheons Every element of these doors was hand made by local master craftsman in Los Angeles, CA.
